WHO CARES ABOUT EDUCATION IN HAWAII?
Several Hawaii teachers discredited the author of a letter to WHT who was critical of the historical failure of the educational system in Hawaii. They missed his valid points and denounced him personally because he was not a teacher. Apparently his crime was that he, a mere citizen, had the temerity to criticize teachers who appeared to be more dedicated to their breaks, days off, holidays, compensation, and union demands than to the needs of the students.

I am a retired master teacher certified in General Elementary and General Secondary Education. Even without those credentials it would still be apparent that we have all watched helplessly for decades while the Department of Education (DoE) and Hawaii State Teacher’s Association (HSTA) continually promised reforms that were not delivered. In the fog of empty rhetoric and absence of government intervention, it seems that Hawaiian families have given up their expectations of excellence based on a deeply-corrupt Hawaiian establishment.

Governor Scott of Florida recently implemented merit pay for teachers. He challenged the teacher’s union and negotiated a new policy in which no tenure will be granted to newly hired teachers. Maryland has been ranked number one in U.S. public education for several years and Maryland spends $600 less on each student than Hawaii. Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana visited hundreds of classrooms personally and found that most 3rd graders could not read well. His subsequent research disclosed that by the 3rd grade each student had been in the classroom for 720 days and $40,000 had been spent on each student. He called this “cruelty” and put an end to the neglect within a year. He gave the teachers’ union an ultimatum and established irrevocable standards that “would be enforced.”
